SSH shortcuts and keys

Shorten the login command#

If you connect often, add an entry to the SSH config file on your own computer — not on Mjolnir. Edit ~/.ssh/config:

bash
vi ~/.ssh/config

Add:

host mj
   Hostname mjolnirgate.unicph.domain
   User <YOUR-KU-ID>
   ServerAliveInterval 60

Open a new terminal, and you can connect with:

bash
ssh mj

ServerAliveInterval 60 sends a keepalive every 60 seconds, which helps prevent idle sessions from being dropped.

Note You still need the UCPH VPN connected first. The shortcut only saves typing — see VPN and SSH access.

SSH key access#

Key-based login is possible, but keys are installed by an administrator — you cannot add one to your own Mjolnir account directly.

To arrange it, generate a key pair on your own computer and then request SSH-key access through the Support Center — see Getting help. The request will tell you where to put the public key and confirm when it is active.

To generate a key pair, if you do not already have one:

bash
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "mjolnir"

Warning Send only the public key — the file ending in .pub. Never share a private key in a ticket, chat message, or document.

Next step#

Once you can connect comfortably, continue to First 15 minutes on Mjolnir.
