Where should my files go?
Mjolnir has two places that matter on day one: your home directory and your project directory. Most real work belongs in the project directory.
Home directory#
/home/<KU-ID>Personal, and limited to 100 GB (live-verified). Use it for:
- Personal configuration and dotfiles (
.bashrc,.vimrc) - Small scripts
- Software environments that don't belong in a shared project folder
Warning Home is not the place for datasets or job output. It is small enough that one analysis can fill it, and a full home directory causes jobs to fail in confusing ways.
Project directory#
Research data belongs in the project directory for the group or project you work with:
/projects/<project>/Every project directory follows the same structure:
| Path | What belongs here | Sharing |
|---|---|---|
/projects/<project>/data/ | Shared datasets, reference files, results multiple people use | Shared across the project — avoid duplicate copies |
/projects/<project>/people/<KU-ID>/ | Your own working files and analyses | Yours within the project |
/projects/<project>/apps/ | Shared software, environments, and scripts maintained for the project | Shared across the project |
/projects/<project>/scratch/ | Temporary, short-term intermediate files | Shared; see the note below |
For your own analyses, /projects/<project>/people/<KU-ID>/ is normally the right place.
Note scratch is temporary working storage and is not backed up. Keep only data there that you can recreate. Files may be removed as part of storage management, so do not rely on scratch for long-term retention.
To see which projects you have access to:
ls /projects/You will only be able to enter the projects you are a member of.
Shared reference databases#
/datasets/globe_databasesA separate, shared, read-only repository of reference databases available across Globe HPC systems — not a place to store your own data.
Retired locations#
Warning /projects/mjolnir1 is retired and is not a supported location. Do not store new work there, and do not follow older guidance that points to it. If you still have data there, raise it through Getting help.
Choosing quickly#
| If it is… | Put it in… |
|---|---|
| Your personal config, small scripts | /home/<KU-ID> |
| Data shared across the project | /projects/<project>/data/ |
| Your own analyses and job output | /projects/<project>/people/<KU-ID>/ |
| Temporary, regenerable intermediates | /projects/<project>/scratch/ |
| A reference database you didn't create | /datasets/globe_databases (read-only) |
