Request software

First, check it is really missing#

Module names do not always match the name you know a tool by, and searching is cheaper than waiting for a request:

bash
module avail <name>
module apropos <keyword>

See Find and load software for the full search workflow. If a different version exists but not the one you want, say so in your request — installing an additional version is a smaller job than a new package.

Choosing the right route#

SituationWhat to do
The tool exists as a moduleLoad it — no request needed
A different version existsRequest the specific version you need
Nothing suitable exists, and others would use itRequest central installation
It is specific to your own project or workflowAsk about a project-appropriate environment

For anything specific to one person or one pipeline, a shared cluster-wide installation may not be the right answer — ask, and say what you are trying to do.

How to request#

Software requests are made in Software Requests in Mjolnir Analytics, after signing in with your Mjolnir account:

Open Software Requests

Submit the software name, version, and the details below there. If you run into a problem with the request process itself, rather than with the software, see Getting help for the Support Center.

What to include#

A request with these details can usually be acted on directly:

  • The exact software name, and a link to its homepage or repository
  • The version you need, and whether a newer one would do
  • What you need it for — this often reveals that an installed tool already covers it
  • How it is normally installed (Conda package, container, source build), if you know
  • Whether others in your group need it too

Note Installation is not automatic or instant. Some software cannot be installed centrally — because of licensing, because it needs privileges that are not available on a shared cluster, or because it only makes sense inside one project's environment. Explaining your goal lets the response suggest a workable alternative rather than just declining.
